Tula’s ever-changing schedule of workshops and special events is an opportunity to tune in to something un-explored or to take it’s exploration to a new level.

AERIAL YOGA SKILLS WORKSHOP (pre-requisite to drop-in Aerial Yoga Classes)

This workshop is a prerequisite to attend the drop-in aerial yoga classes.  Learn how to stay safe and present in the fabric hammock as you invert, maneuver, balance, stretch and have fun!! Practice modification and propping techniques to help you work more comfortably in the fabric.  Elevate your yoga practice to a new level and experience it in a new way.

Pair up with a loved one and learn & share a basic Thai Yoga Massage sequence that frees up tension head to toe.

Enter the no hurry zone of Thai Yoga Massage. Come unwind from your week while sharing time with a loved one! Pairing together, whether spouse, parent, sibling or friend, you will be guided to give (while the other receives & vice versa, hooray!) a relaxing massage.

You will be introduced to a basic sequence, that touches it all from head to toe, freeing up low back, hip, neck and shoulder tension.

Nourish body, mind and soul with the powerful pairing of Yoga + Tea.

Begin by sharing Chinese gongfu style tea to still the mind and focus the senses; a delicious transition from the busy outer world to the quiet inner self. At each class you’ll enjoy a new selection of decadent teas from Verdant Tea sure to engage and delight the senses.  Mindfully sip teas, connect to the breath to release tension from the body, and cultivate a peaceful inner focus.

Taking this focus and calm to the mat, we’ll transition into our practice of Yin Yoga, where your practice will be heightened by the peaceful and meditative qualities offered by the tea.  Each class will focus on its own unique theme – such as grounding, heart-opening, or energy and balance.

Yin Yoga has its roots in Chinese Taoism and offers a perfect balance to the busy nature of our society.  We focus on stillness, yielding, and the subtle movement of energy.  Poses are held for 1-5 minutes, with an emphasis on relaxing the muscles in order to gain deeper access to the joints, connective tissues and fascia.  We work on gently increasing flexibility and strengthening the joints.  The result is a release of deeply held physical tension, newfound openness and ease, and a calmly focused mind.

You will leave feeling deeply nourished and stress-free.

Wonderful for beginners and experienced yogis alike!

Angela Kittock is a Certified Yoga Teacher, receiving her certification from the Yoga Center of Minneapolis in 2009.  She has since completed her Level II Yin Yoga Teacher Training with Michelle Pietrzak-Wegner in Minneapolis.  Angela’s personal practice and life experience deeply inform her teaching style.  She finds the practice of Yin Yoga to be exceptionally beneficial for both body and mind through the release of physical tension, the movement of energy through the body, and the ability to create space & quiet in the mind.  Angela also practices Chinese gongfu tea ceremony and loves integrating this meditative ritual with yin yoga, as it perfectly sets the stage for a quiet, focused practice.

When we think of connective tissue, our thoughts generally turn to tendons and ligaments.  While we don’t often hear about fascia, its’ the connective tissue that literally holds our bodies together.  Without the integrity of fascia, our bodies wouldn’t have thir familiar shape, form or functionality.

In this workshop, you will learn what fascia is, and how it transmits forces from one part of the body to another.  Using easy-to-learn yoga techniques, you will develop a strategy to release long-standing biomechanical restrictions, and gain insight into the wisdom of the yoga poses.  This session will delve deeply into the specific strategies to release tight hamstrings.

Join Brianna for a luxurious two hour candlelight Yin class that ends with Yoga Nidra  (a guided deep relaxation practice). Yin Yoga is a soft, still, deep and nurturing seated practice. It goes beyond stretching the muscles. It opens and creates space in the body while cultivating elasticity in the fascial system. When we practice Yin, energy is able to move more freely throughout the body. The class comes at a perfect time with the Holidays approaching as well as theWinter Solstice- it’s a time of transformation.  Give yourself the time and space to feel and experience the now. YOGA NORTH YOGA TEACHER TRAININGS AT TULA

Yoga North uses unique techniques based on the Yamas & Niyamas and a progressive approach to classic yoga using somatics, therapeutic yoga and bridging these techniques back to classic postures/asana. This teacher training 500 hour program begins after completing a 200 hour program at Yoga North or another qualified yoga studio. Once you have gained “the essentials” from your 200 hour training, you are invited to deepen your study with advancing the areas of study in body, breath, mind, and philosophy. The course consists of nine intensive weekends, one per month with additional home study, practicum work and a mentorship program.  Final weekend of the training will be spent on retreat in Northern Minnesota

Join us for Kirtan at Tula! Transition into the new year with call-and-response chanting and dancing – all are welcome!

Doors open at 5:00pm, Music starts at 6:00pm.

Blankets, bolsters and yoga mats available for use at the studio or bring your own. There are also a large number of chairs available.

Wear comfortable clothing. Dancing is encouraged! Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated.

Bands:

  • Blue Spirit Wheel is a progressive evolution in the world of mantra music. Based on the fundamental rhythms contained within the Sanskrit language, the band uses solid bass grooves, tribal beats and an improvisational vocal style to create soundscapes that draw the listener into a deep state of meditation and consciousness expansion. The audience is invited to participate by chanting simple mantras along with the music, or interact with the sounds through dance and movement, or enter a receptive meditative space where the vibrations of the Sanskrit bija mantras create powerful energy shifts. 
  • The Wild Moon Bhaktas’ sound is born of the timeless folk rhythms and wide, open mystic spaces that lie between the ghats of the Ganges and the banks of the Mississippi. Raised on the roots music of their country and then nourished by the music of India’s Bhaktas and Sufi Mystics, the Wild Moon Bhaktas cull their sound from their vocals, tablas, strings and accordion. They play lively kirtans and heart chants in Sanskrit and English, sing ecstatic poems of Rumi, Kabir and Mirabai and tell old spirit stories.
  • Kirtan Path has been singing with the greater Twin Cities kirtan community for 5 years. They invite you to open your heart and raise your voices to the Divine, connecting with your innate center of joy and love. Their chants are simple, call-and-response and sing-along pieces with powerful mantras – both slow and meditative as well as lively and danceable. 
  • Sons of Shiva is a Twin Cities based Kirtan group conceived by Perry Ehrmann, a veteran of the Minneapolis Kirtan community and a local musician for almost 30 years. Perry plays the guitar, bass, drums, harmonium, hand pan and sings lead vocals. He works with local musicians for recording and live performances. His blend of modern Kirtan has a deep sacred vibration of sound that will get your body moving and singing.

Are you ready to deepen your experience of yoga?  To experience your poses in a more profound way?  Join Yoga Master, Laura Erdman-Luntz and her husband, Tai Chi Master Ron Erdman-Luntz, for an experience like no other.  Created from their combined 60 years of practicing their arts, this unique workshop will take you deeper into your practice.  Ron will guide you into feeling your chi and get it moving through chi kung exercises.  Then they will both take you into yoga poses to experience the flow in the poses.  Your poses will feel more grounded and aligned.  Your spine will feel longer, your heart more open and the benefits of your practice is exponential.

TRAVEL DATES: Friday, January 30 – Sunday, February 8, 2015

$2,750 INCLUDES:

  • Round Trip Airfare between Minneapolis and Guatemala City
  • Round Trip Flight To Flores once in Guatemala
  • Ground & Water transportation: Private transportation to and from all cities and a boat tour of beautiful Lake Atitlan.
  • 9 Nights Hotel (double occupancy, single occupancy available, please inquire about pricing if interested) -2 nights in Antigua, 5 nights in San Lucas Toliman on the beautiful Lake Atitlan, 2 nights in Guatemala City and one night in Tikal (Rainforest and Mayan Temples site).
  • Meals: In Antigua, Guatemala City and Tikal two simple meals will be provided daily, while in San Lucas Toliman, three daily meals will be provided. Beverages are not provided with meals; however, fresh water is provided at each hotel with the exception of the rainforest.
  • Classes: Daily Yoga & Meditation. We will practice yoga and meditation along the journey. The time, location and style of yoga & meditation will depend on what we need to balance ourselves throughout. Some examples are: sun salutations at the organic macadamia nut farm, yoga & meditation at the Mayan ceremonial sites and candlelit restorative practices at our lodging before bed. Our mats will travel with us so we can be prepared and spontaneous. Throughout the trip, we will also be discussing yoga philosophy and ways to “live yoga.”  No experience necessary.
  • Volcano adventure: Transportation to and from site, guide and hike up volcano Pacaya, the most active volcano in Guatemala
  • Canopy Tour or Zip lining: While in the Rainforest we will have an amazing zip line experience through the forest canopy, a breathtaking adventure.
  • Cultural Immersion:
  • We have an amazing opportunity to hike to a mountaintop village to learn how to make tortillas, tamales and guacamole from a beautiful Mayan woman.
  • We will sit with an amazing 90-year-old Mayan man and “learn” his indigenous language called Kaqchikel, he may even play his marimba for us!
  • We will take a tour of various projects designed by and with the Mayan people to support them living how they desire to live.
  • We will have the opportunity to visit La Paz International Inc.’s fair trade partners, have a jewelry-making lesson and learn from a manager of a reforestation project.
  • And no worries, there will be plenty of time for rest, rejuvenation and relaxation!
  • Tours in each of the cities we visit, including visits to ruins, markets, an ancient Mayan ceremonial site, a coffee cooperative, artisan markets and more! We will also visit an organic Macadamia Nut farm where we will have a lovely breakfast while learning from the owner and operator of the farm. While in Tikal we will have an amazing tour of the Mayan Temples, go on a sunset journey into the forest to refresh, meditate and do yoga and we will have a very early sunrise tour for those interested to watch the jungle wake up – breathtaking and calming.
  • Village Visits:  Boat trip will take us to two communities on Lake Atitlan.
  • Extra costs to consider: beverages, snacks outside of designated meals or smaller meals in between larger ones if desired, souvenirs, tips (recommended for hotels, drivers and our guides in Tikal) and $3.00 fee to be paid directly at Tikal airport for their extra taxes.

ANNA VERHOYE:   I started La Paz International, Inc. over twelve years ago as a selfish effort to reconcile my own feelings of inadequacy and inability to effect change on the many social justice issues that plague our world.  I soon realized that the only way to effect change in our world is to offer opportunities for people to see a world view that isn’t easily accessible in a country that has so much privilege.  Awareness, mindfulness, yoga, meditation, education and reflection are our greatest weapons against apathy.
As the founder of La Paz International, Inc., I have traveled to Guatemala fifty times over the last decade taking college students, faculty and community members from around the country and approximately four other European countries. I have traveled extensively throughout the entire country of Guatemala from north to south and coast-to-coast as well as to 31 other countries.  Having advanced degrees in human communication and social justice, I emphasize the importance of human dignity, solidity and a reciprocal sharing of lives in all of my work and organized journey’s.
Our success focuses on a reciprocal sharing of livesan expressed philosophy that demands an emphasis on the fundamental dignity of every human being.  Many in the culture of the United States perceive “serving” to be something that we do “to” or “for” others; at La Paz International “service” is embedded in our honoring the people with whom we interact in ways that demonstrate humility, care, compassion and even love.  “Service” from our perspective will be listening to Mayan elders who desire to teach us about their trade or lived experience, learning to cook from a Mayan woman or learning about the history of the Mayan world through Mayan eyes.  We are not a mission group; we do not bring donations to the “poor” that we think they need; we do not go to countries where suffering is endemic and tell them how they should live so that their lives can be better.  As an organization and a people, we stand in solidarity with the suffering as they tell us how they would like to live — our responsibility in interacting with those who are culturally different from us is to help them live in a way that honors their desires and fundamental human dignity.

Importantly, travel with La Paz International is called a “journey.” Our voyages are a lived experience on foreign soil and they also require us to journey inward, excavating and refining pieces of ourselves. Sometimes these discoveries about self can take us out of our comfort zones, yet somehow allow us, through reflection and mindfulness, to refine our vision for how we want to interact with the world.

I am passionate about helping to create spaces for us grow and expand.  I’m very excited about Namaste Journeys as they are a perfect venue to facilitate a deepening in our awareness and understanding of self, other and how our thoughts and actions can lead to increased peacefulness in our world.

ANN BLACKBURN:  I opened Tula Yoga & Wellness in March 2012 to make yoga and wellness accessible to all.  With our donation-based philophy and mission: “Offering balance and vitality to life; delivered with compassion, joy and generosity”, I thought an adventure to Guatemala with Anna would be a wonderful way for us to live our yoga through travel, exploration and cultural immersion.   I hope you can join us!
