Reclaiming Sun Salutations - Weekend Intensive

image.jpg

Are sun salutations or ‘flow’ really traditional to yoga practice? How are they related to the Vedas, to chanting, to pranayama, and to nature? Can we reclaim them so they don’t demand so much of our wrists, shoulders, and low back? Can downdog be more than just filler in a sequence?

This weekend course will look at the Vedic roots and Krishnamacharya’s teachings of karmakanda (rituals practice) and jnanakanda (wisdom practices), all intended to leave the practioner svarat or master of himself. From that perspective, we’ll know how to breathe new life into the same old ‘flow’, practice from principle rather than rote. The principle helps us both understand body-minds and the intention of these practices. Understanding clears up bad teaching and leaves us with more depth, richness, and connection.

Use current understandings of biomechanics to explore adaptations, scaling, upper body strength and mobility as well as the spinal anatomy and breathing mechanics involved in common sun salutes. But more importantly we will recover the heart of the practices in their Vedic context. Learn mantras and seed sounds, including the gayatri mantra. And we’ll dive into the subtle aspects of meditation on the sun, Agni, and the Self.

This course is designed for yoga teachers who want to evolve their teaching and for yoga students who want depth and on-going learning.
