Therapeutic Approach to Classic Asana in St Paul with Ann & Dan B
Yoga Sutra 2.46 Sthira Sukham Asanam “The posture should be steady and comfortable.”
This Immersion is for both yoga teachers and students who want to deepen their practice. Could your yoga practice be hurting you? If you are a yoga teacher, are you concerned some of your yoga students are at risk of hurting themselves? Or perhaps you would like to get inspired about supporting yourself and your students to increase mobility and freedom in their bodies and advance their mat practice to the next level.
Yoga North International SomaYoga Institute is known for the methodology of SomaYoga- a unique blending of Somatics, Therapeutic Yoga, and classic yoga asana (postures).
In this immersion, we will look at yoga asana through a study of anatomy, kinesiology, and SomaYoga methodology & techniques so your practice and students’ practice can flourish. Specific SomaYoga techniques – such as aligning from the spine to the largest joints and the extremities, using Somatic movements to increase mobility and function, and using asana to build strength and stability -- will be studied within the framework of this immersion.
Various yoga asanas from several categories of postures will be discussed and practiced through the lens of SomaYoga. The curriculum will include a variety of standing poses, forward folds, twists, backbends, pre-inversion practices, and preparatory poses for arm balances. We will explore how to use good biomechanics in yoga postures to cultivate and maintain steadiness and ease in yoga asana (postures), how to use Somatic movements to increase mobility and awareness, learn new variations, and how to use props in postures to progress yourself/students in cultivating optimal stability, strength, and mobility in yoga practice.
Perfect for students or yoga teachers who want to:
• Safely practice/teach poses for each individual.
• Practice the art of “seeing” bodies and learn how to support yourself/students to avoid compensation and dysfunctional movement patterns.
• Deepen your practice and understanding of poses
• Experience/teach a more therapeutic aspect of asana by learning how to creatively level poses and use props.
• Learn how to sequence a practice. Experience/teach asana to many levels and abilities of students.
• Approach asana from the center out.
• Integrate neuromuscular re-education (Somatics) into classic asana
